Are they trying to KILL steampunk? This ad is so bad, if I stop laughing, I'm going to throw up.

Oh yeah... And the art? Stolen from the artists. Nice.

Today is...

Intergalactic local pizza day. It is the day when sentient species from across the galaxies partake in a local pizza place wherever they are.

None of this Pizza Hut crap, find a pizza joint which envelops the local gestalt, and dig in! Go ahead, do it! You don't think the Crazy Cwuazubolts in Arcturus are neglecting such an important day, do you?

The Earth, as big as it is, isn't that huge. One of the interesting things about my bike trip is that it gave me some perspective about how small Earth really was. In practice, if I had the right plans and no major problems, I could ride across the US in about 2 months (No, I am not actually considering doing this... That sounds incredibly boring to me).

In theory, I could ride my bicycle around it's entire equatorial circumference for the Earth in a little under 2 years. I have enough miles on my cars that I could have driven the circumference 10 times. Our planet is not so large as to be unfathomable.

In comparison, it'd take me 632,828 years to ride around the surface of W Cephei.

Ok, a couple things:

Went to Boston, had fun. Went to the Museum of Science, which was cool, especially with the boys. What's double-plus good? We got in for free, thanks to our National Zoo membership.

The wedding was pretty, and it was nice to hang with family. I hit the dance floor and tore it up a bit. Extended family that didn't know I could dance kept asking where I learned to do so. The truth is: I have no idea. It's not like I ever studied or practice or anything.

The boys had a great time though, and had fun on the dance floor. I think I got a couple groove monkeys. So, while I never studied dance, I may encourage them to if they're interested.

So, we went back to the MoS on Monday to see if we could see the Harry Potter exhibit... And I think someone had their head up their ass. Here's why:

Member Fee: $0 for general admission, $5 for GA + HP
Non-member fee: $20 for general admission, $26 for GA + HP
Recripocal membership: $0 for general admission, $24 for GA + HP

So, while other people are paying an extra $5 or $6 bucks for HP, we're paying $24? The person behind the counter said that was a good deal, because it also included general admission... which doesn't make sense as GA for us is $0.

We only had an hour or so to spare, which would have been fine given we'd already seen the other exhibits. There's no way we could afford $50 for an hour's worth of entertainment though. I mentioned something seemed wrong, but she told us it was "a good deal". I didn't have the time or energy to argue. We turned around and left, which sucks cuz I really wanted to see it.

Ok... So let's talk about Music. Namely, Muse's Uprising. The first thing that ran through my head when I heard the beginning was "Did someone remake the Doctor Who theme?"... A couple notes later it was clear that this, in fact, was NOT a Doctor Who theme remake, and was supposed to be a distinct work.

Now, I'm not the type to generally state that "song A ripped off song B", but goddamnit if song B gets stuck in my head after listening to song A, there's something awry.

Boston Museum of Science... Harry Potter Exhibit opens the DAY AFTER we've planned to go. The day of the wedding.

First Code Monkey the musical, and now this. Boston is full of schedule fail. Maybe we can squeeze it in Monday morning? I'm not sure.

There's a number of videos of this guy's music, most of which center around excellent execution of a simple theme. This is my fave so far.

I know, I know, everyone wants more nitty-gritty details about the bike trip. Well, they're coming. I have about half of my notes written out now. 18 audio logs processed, and so somewhere around 75 photos ready to go... 1/2 way there.

And we miss all the fun by 500 years.

Or at least the day. Why? Because I'm not a total and utter asshole to my kids.

So I'm at my local Chipotle (yum)... And this mom is carrying her child, maybe 5 or 6. I'm filling up my drink, and I overhear this:

"Do you know what this is?" asks the mother
"Hot sauce," the child replies, fearfully

The note of distress in his voice captured my attention

"Do you want this in your mouth?" the mother queried
"No!" was the emphatic response, covering his mouth
"Well then, you had better stop yelling"

I stopped dead in my tracks for a second, and watched the mother carry her young child away.

This is a woman who was using hot sauce as a form of punishment when her child misbehaves. I don't really care if it's spanking or whatnot: pain is pain, even if it doesn't leave a bruise for child services to find. Using the threat of significant physical discomfort to get the behavior you want just doen't seem like great parenting technique.

Now, I'm not one of those super hardcore "never touch your child no matter what" kind of guys. If they do something violent, I can/will physically restrain them from harming themselves or other people until they calm down... Still, something about this incident struck me as alarming: Here was a mom who was conciously using the threat of pain to scare her kids into behaving how she wanted them to.

Yeah, that kid'll need therapy before he'll ever be able to eat hot wings.

There's a lot of material here... This is going to take me some time.

I'm in Bar Harbor now. I did it! I really did it! 265 miles in 5 days... I have photos and audio from the trip. I'll get to posting all of that when I get home.

I crashed my bike 4 miles outside of town... I was headed downhill and there was a pothole I was unable to miss... Because of all the weight on the back of the bike and it's momentum, I went head-first over the handlebars. I'm doing OK, just a few scrapes... I'll probably have a souvinier long-term, but no big deal. I've done a lot worse to myself. So, down to 3 usable gears (8, 16, and 24), I limped the bike all the way to Bar Harbor. But I DID IT.

The bike will need a new set of handlebars at the very least. I think I may have damaged the seat too... Which is apparently a theme for this trip.

Hopefully it'll be a quick fix here, otherwise I'll have to take the bike home and get it fixed at Gaithersburg Bicycles.

Going to hang out at Acadia with my parents tomorrow. After that things are a bit up in the air.

Still Alive

So I'm at day 4 of my tip. I'm chilling with my parents now (they have a tailer). 200 miles under my wheels. It's been a challenge of body, spirit and mind (in that order). I've seen some great sights, overcome some pretty significant obstacles, and done neat things. I'm loving every minute of it. I have one more day of scheduled biking, and then I'm going to figure out what I'm going to do with the remainder of my vacation.

I'm making a backup of the photos thus far on my parents' computer. Oh, and I have audio logs too. Need to back those up.
